Selly Chepkoech was born and raised in Kapcherobot village, Segero/Barsombe ward of Uasin Gishu county in a family of ten. She attended Barsombe Primary School and Kapropita High School before enrolling at the Baringo Diocese Teachers College where she graduate with both a Certificate and Diploma in Education. Currently she lives in Soy ward, Soy constituency of Uasin Gishu county. Her experience as a teacher where she has worked directly preparing children academically is what has motivated her to contest for an elective position hence her vision is to ensure that children of Soy ward attains proper education and that the region is well developed.
Selly tried her hands in politics back in 2007 contesting as a councillor but finished fifth out of six candidates. In 2013, she contested again on an ODM party ticket and finished third after which she was elected as the ODM chairperson in Soy constituency for two years a position she held until 2015 where her duties involved mobilizing women to join the party and as the link between women ODM members in the constituency and the party’s secretariat. In 2016, she defected to join the Labour Party of Kenya and was elected the Organizing Secretary of the Women Congress in Uasin Gishu county a position she holds to date.She has previously worked as a PTA teacher in Vumilia Primary School where she was elected as the Welfare Officer charged with the responsibility of looking into the welfare of fellow teaching staff. She also serves as the president of ECDE teachers in Uashin Gishu county and here she’s charged with supervising all the ECDE centres across the entire county.
Soy ward suffers high rates of school dropout’s due to financial constraints and backward cultural practices such as early marriages and many parents not educating the girl child. This has made the ward suffer underdevelopment since a majority of people live in poverty conditions thus has enhanced criminal activities. Selly purposes to set up a ward education funds kitty through contributions from well-wishers and donors to help pay school fees for needy children. She also intends to lobby for more bursary funds allocation to the children of Soy ward so that as many needy children as possible can be able to access education.
Feeder roads across Soy ward are dilapidated thus hindering on the movement of people and goods. Selly purposes to lobby the county government to set aside funds for renovation and construction of feeder roads across the entire ward. She also purposes to construct water tunnels and bridges to discourage flooding that renders most of the roads inaccessible especially during the rainy seasons.
Majority of the youth and women of Soy ward are jobless and this has led to indulgence in drug and substance abuse among other societal ills. Selly purposes to lobby both youth and women and train them on entrepreneurial and financial management skills. She also intends to encourage them to set up small business and also form groups that she will help register so that they can be able to access funds such as the Youth Enterprise Funds and Uwezo Funds.
