Mildred Atieno was born and raised in Mahola, Ulawe sub-location of West Alego location of Siaya county from a family of two. The mother of five is married in Makemo village, South West Alego location of West Alego ward. She schooled at Dr Livingstone Primary School in Nairobi for her lower primary education before transferring to Ngiya Girls Primary School where she sat for her CPE examinations. Mildred later joined Nyamira Girls Secondary School for her secondary education. She holds a Diploma in Early Childhood Development from Diocese of Kisumu.Her motivation to vie for political office as a Member of County Assembly for West Alego ward is based from the fact that most of the residents of the ward have always turned to her to solutions to problems and counsel. Her vision is to eradicate poverty out of West Alego ward.
Mildred has served as the Chairlady of the Board of Management for Mwer Secondary School where she supported the building of a dining hall for the school. She is also the Patron of Konyri Kendi CBO and brought Uranga Division together to form the Konyri Kendi Welfare Association. Mildred has also served as a member of Sirinde Secondary School Board of Management where she ensured the installation of water in the school. She also successfully supported the education of seven orphans up to college level, run health camps with health workers in the community aimed at eradicating jiggers and started the Siaya Central Primary School.
Agriculture is the lifeline of the West Alego residents yet it has not been successfully utilized both for food security and business. Mildred intends to promote agriculture through bringing in expertise to give residents updated information on how to improve agriculture, purchase fertilizers at subsidized prices for farmers and dig boreholes for irrigation. She will also advocate for cross breeding of animals for improved breeds while linking the local residents to external markets for their produce.
The ward has very few and ill equipped public health facilities thus patients are forced to walk long distance so as to access the facilities. Mildred purposes lobby the county government and donors for funds to help in setting up of more health facilities across the ward. She also intends to run an awareness campaigns targeting women to sensitize them on the importance of attending clinics during and after pregnancy and child immunization.
West Alego ward has a very high number of school drop outs due to financial constraints and early pregnancies. Mildred intends to run campaigns that are aimed at encouraging those who have dropped out of school to go back to school or join adult education centers to finish their schooling. She also intends to lobby the county government to upgrade village polytechnics and other vocational training institutions in the ward to enroll many school dropouts through bursary and scholarship programs.
