Residents of Vihiga county depend on farming as the key economic activity but due to poverty most of the farmers who are small scale farmers cannot afford farm inputs. Vihiga county has few health facilities that are widely scattered, forcing many residents to travel long distance in search of medical care. Women also lack sufficient knowledge on reproductive health resulting in high maternal death. Upon election, Mercy intends to work closely with both the county and national government to facilitate the setting up of gynecological units in every major hospital in the county to provide the required medical help women when it comes to reproductive health. She also intends to conduct sensitizations for women on the same.
Many children from poor families and orphans struggle with education since their parents or guardians cannot afford to pay fees or buy school uniforms and other learning material. This has greatly affected education with a large number of school drop outs cases. As Women’s Representative, Mercy intends to lobby parliament to increase bursary allocations to the county and ensure that the bursary supports needy students throughout their entire schooling and not just single terms.
