Joyce Kinavi was born and raised in Athi River, Machakos county in a family of 8 kids as the second born. Joyce attended KMC primary in Athi River and later joined Mukumu Girls High School in western region. She has pursued Diploma in Community Health and Certificate in Community Development. She was inspired to become a woman leader in the society due to the exclusion of women in leadership in her community. Her vision is to ensure her constituency becomes a drug free place by empowering youth and women with information and for Athi River Township to prosper economically and socially.
Joyce is currently the vice chair of Chama Cha Uzalendo in Athi river where she works closely with the party to encourage the residents of Athi River to register as voters as well as sensitize the public to maintain peace during the election period. She is the chairlady of Amua Wish foundation where she has managed to purchase school uniforms for disadvantaged kids in her community and sourced for sponsorship from donors and utilized the funds to build five homes for widows. Further, Joyce has help widowed women to join groups which help them to earn a living by introducing table banking, basket weaving and manufacturing detergent soaps.
Youth and Women Empowerment
Women and Youth form the bulk of any society, and Joyce feels this segment is lagging behind in development matters. Idleness is causing the youth to indulge drug abuse, and the women are not empowered due to lack of resources. Joyce intends to initiate talent centers, where the talented members of the society will be nurtured. She will also initiate projects to empower women, with a special emphasis on widows, which will make the women self-reliant.
Joyce has lived in Athi River almost her entire life, and has identified access to clean fresh water as a very big problem. She plans to lobby the County Government to dig at least two boreholes in every
village, and will also try and convince East African Portland Cement and KMC to expand both Kasuitu and Jam City Dams. This will enable them both to pump a higher capacity of water hence alleviate the scarcity.
There are inadequate health facilities in Athi River, and those that are operating in the area lack adequate medicines. The area is also not so clean resulting in myriad health issues popping up. Joyce plans to lobby for the completion of Mavoko level 4 hospital and ensure there are enough drugs at all health centres. She will in the same vein lobby for construction of dispensaries at Kasuitu village and Jam city village, to ensure the residents there access quality health care with minimal hustle.
