Fathia Mahabub who is the first Muslim woman of Somali origin from Mandera County to make it to the August House was born and raised in Nairobi. She schooled in Nairobi before proceeding to Mandera for her secondary school education. It was through witnessing years of suffering by the people of Mandera through untold humanitarian crises and clan fights that had de-stabilized the economy, and she developed interest in politics, promising herself to one day be part of the solution promoting peace and developing the county. The mother of five children, Hon. Mahabub is a Business Management graduate. Her vision is to see Mandera county achieve the development level of other established counties such as Kiambu and Muranga, in the near future through empowering women and youth, improving infrastructure and access to water. She is seeking reelection on a Democratic Party ticket

Prior to joining politics, Hon. Mahbub worked as a banker with the Gulf African Bank a banker for over 18 years. Hon Fathia Mahabub sits in the watchdog Public Accounts Committee and the Energy, Communication and Information Committee. She is also a member of KEWOPA and has benefited from its induction raining programs for women MPs and senators.

Economic Empowerment

Many residents in Mandera county are dependent on livestock and small businesses for their income. Upon her reelection,. Hon. Mahbub intends to lobby for economic empowerment not just of women and youth but for all the community so that they can be able to effectively trade.


Mandera county requires economic growth after many years of marginalization by governments. With devolution, this is possible through improved infrastructure which Hon. Mahbub intends to lobby for in order to ensure that Mandera county is accessible and enables trade within itself and with other counties.
